Fairfield Harbour Garden Club

By Barbara Paulsen

July 2022

The leadership committee of the Fairfield Harbour Garden Club is hard at work lining up several interesting speakers and fun activities for the 2022-2023 year, with something for everyone. If you have ideas or a topic you would like presented, reach out to a member of the committee with your suggestion. (Committee members are listed on the FH Garden Club website.

The Club has an established scholarship program for a Craven or Pamlico County student pursuing a career in the horticulture arena. The fundraiser with three raffle baskets supporting this valuable program, will be this fall. Tickets will be sold at the FH Fall Craft Fair. Visit the FHGC booth at the craft fair to see the baskets and purchase your tickets.

The Fairfield Harbour Garden club does not hold regular monthly meetings in July and August. The next monthly meeting will be September 12 at 9:30 am in the FH Community Center. Watch for information on the meeting topic.

The FFHGC is one of the largest clubs in the community, and caters to all kinds of plant enthusiasts: flowers, vegetables, rose aficionados, cacti, house plants and the list goes on and on. Do you have that corner of your property that provides some gardening challenges, and you just don’t know what to do? We would love to hear from you!

A Message from the Fairfield Harbour Garden Club President, Susan Klein

Although a lot of people think SPRING when they think of planting, Fall is the best time to plant most perennials, trees, bushes, and grass creating habitat for wildlife. Join the thousands of wildlife enthusiasts and backyard naturalists across the country who have been recognized for creating wildlife havens in their very own yards! If you have provided food, water, cover, and places to raise young for wildlife, your yard can be certified by the National Wildlife Federation and North Carolina Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. And did you know that the National Wildlife Federation (NWF.org) offers a program to certify your backyard as a wildlife habitat?

Wildlife habitat gardens are a haven for local birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Once certified, you can share your accomplishments and commitments with the neighborhood by purchasing and posting an exclusive Certified Wildlife Habitat sign from the NWF.
The (secure) $20 dollar processing fee and sign purchase goes directly to the NWF’s programs to protect wildlife and its habitat! What a great school or scout project! Or something easy for all those bird watchers out there!!
See NWF.org for details: Certify Your Habitat to Help Wildlife! – Certified Wildlife Habitat (nwf.org)

Have questions? Need some assistance? The Garden Club could even host a short info session to discuss options on how you can meet the certification process!! It is simple to do.

LETTUCE HELP YOU!!
ITS THYME TO GET DIRTY!!!

Fairfield Harbour Garden Club July Yard of the Month

By Carolyn Hansen

FHGC Yard of the Month Committee Chair

The Yard of the month Committee for the Fairfield Harbour Garden Club has chosen 909 Capstan Court as outstanding yard in the Harbour as the July 2022 winner. The homeowners are Bob and Lorraine Walter, previous winners of the Yard of the Month.
This beautifully landscaped yard is both colorful and natural looking. The yard has a variety of trees, and the lawn is well groomed as are the trees and shrubs. There are lovely begonias in the front yard and many inpatients with colorful blooms. Bob enjoys working in his yard and does all the lawn and garden maintenance. Come see this beautiful landscape. Congratulations Bob and Lorraine this is an impressive front yard!
